LeBron James is set to share the court with his son Bronny James, who just made his debut against the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Lakers’ first preseason matchup. Though his stat line—two points, a rebound, an assist, and three blocks in 16 minutes—may seem modest, there’s more to the story than numbers.

Under the guidance of first-year head coach JJ Redick, Bronny showed flashes of potential, particularly on the defensive end, earning praise despite the Lakers’ 124-107 loss.

In his post-game press conference, Coach Redick emphasized Bronny’s defensive prowess, highlighting his unique capabilities. “He can do some things defensively at his size that are really unique and can turn into a really disruptive defender,” Redick said.

While Bronny’s shooting performance was a challenge (1-for-6 from the field), Redick remains optimistic about the young guard’s future. “He’s trying to figure out who he is on offense, but he’s easy to coach, and I love being around him.”

Bronny James addresses ‘amazing vibes’ in locker-room

Bronny’s debut comes at a time of transition for the Lakers, with Redick having taken over coaching duties from Darvin Ham. This shift in leadership has seemingly brought a breath of fresh air to the Lakers’ camp, with Bronny praising the positive atmosphere Redick has fostered.

“It’s been amazing vibes in the facility,” Bronny told reporters. “From what I’ve heard, it’s an improvement from last year.”

This preseason is not just a critical moment for Bronny, but also for Redick, who is on his first season as head coach after a long and distinguished playing career. Bronny, being Redick’s first major developmental project, will likely split his time between the Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. This dual role gives the younger James the opportunity to grow within a structured system, with Redick viewing him as a long-term asset for the team.

LeBron James could play in next game; Redick has mountains to climb

While LeBron was ruled out of the preseason opener, Redick hinted that the four-time MVP could play in the Lakers’ upcoming game against the Phoenix Suns, possibly setting the stage for the first father-son duo appearance in Lakers history.

Despite the focus on Bronny, it’s clear that Redick’s plans don’t just concern the 19-year-old guard. Lakers veterans like Rui Hachimura and D’Angelo Russell have also expressed their admiration for the new coach’s approach.

Redick’s task of rejuvenating the team is a tall order, especially after the Lakers’ disappointing playoff exit last season, but his methods are already garnering attention for their emphasis on energy and defensive intensity.
